Name:
Location: Ventura, California, United States

I retired from the US Navy in Sept 1993 after 32 years of active and reserve service. While serving on ships and working on surface to air missile and gun systems, I was on the Cuban Missile Blockade and served in Vietnam. My last active duty was in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm. I was part of the Military Sealift Command in Saudi Arabia. After retirement, I got involved with the U.S. Volunteers soon after 9-11-2001. I was trained and certified through Riverside National Cemetery to be an Honor Guard prior to establishing a Memorial Honors Detail in Ventura County California, in January, 2004.

I just returned from a military service given for Ruby Probasco, an RN for the U S Navy during WWII.

The dignity, respect, and gratitude with which Carl Wade and Bob Davison presented the Flag will certainly be one of the most meaningful memories that entire room will hold of Ruby.

Each one there, I would speculate, remembered a different Ruby when looking at her photo, projected overhead. Four people saw their sister, a few their mother or grandmother, and probably most saw an elderly woman they knew from church.

But this most respectful presentation focused everyone's attention to a specific young lady in the 1940s, who set aside her personal life for Duty ...to the idea behind that remarkable Flag.

As a member of Bugles Across America, it's always an honor to salute those who have served our country. And it is an equal honor to do so beside the men of the 1st U S Volunteers.
